Gylfaginning 24

Prose Edda — Old Norse facing a living language

24

Njörðr í Nóatúnum gat síðan tvau börn. Hét annat Freyr, en dóttir Freyja. Þau váru fögr álitum ok máttug. Freyr er inn ágætasti af ásum. Hann ræðr fyrir regni ok skini sólar ok þar með ávexti jarðar, ok á hann er gott at heita til árs ok friðar. Hann ræðr ok fésælu manna. En Freyja er ágætust af ásynjum. Hon á þann bæ á himni, er Fólkvangr heitir.

"Njord later fathered two children at Noatun: the son was called Freyr, the daughter Freyja. They were fair and mighty. Freyr is the most honored of the Aesir. He governs rain and sunshine, and with them the fruit of the earth, and it's good to call on him for good harvests and peace. He also governs men's prosperity. But Freyja is the most honored of the goddesses.

She has a home in the sky called Folkvang, and wherever she rides to battle, she gets half the slain, and Odin the other half, as it says here: Folkvang it's called, where Freyja rules / who sits in the hall; / half the slain she chooses / every day, and Odin gets the other half. Her hall, Sessrumnir, is great and beautiful. When she travels, she drives a chariot pulled by cats.

She's the readiest of all to hear men's prayers, and the honorific title 'Fru,' used for noblewomen, comes from her name. Love songs please her well — it's good to call on her for help in love."
